When Disability Strikes, Will You Be Prepared?

Disability Insurance Huntersville and Charlotte

By Christine Muñoz, IIABA Director of Employee Benefits

Tomorrow marks the first day of May. Did you know that May has been designated Disability Insurance Awareness Month in order to educate consumers about the need for disability coverage? As an insurance agent, you spend your days protecting others from the risks of the unknown. But do you know your own risk when it comes to disability?

It’s a common misconception that disability is most often caused by accidents or work injuries. But illnesses like cancer, heart attacks and diabetes are the leading cause of long term disability. Approximately 90% of disabilities are caused by illnesses rather than accidents, according to the Council for Disability Awareness Long Term Disability Claims Review 2010.

To keep it personal, family business Fogle Insurance started small, and stays small with a purpose.

When it comes to the insurance business, times sure have changed.

There was a day when your agent was likely your neighbor — someone you saw regularly at church or in the grocery store, someone who knew the names of your kids and the family pets.

There was a day when your agent visited you at your home, discussing your family’s shifting insurance needs over sweet tea at the kitchen table as jobs changed, incomes changed and kids

Raleigh, N.C. – Today, Governor McCrory outlined a framework for Medicaid reform to improve care, customer service and results for North Carolina’s young and elderly, disabled, mentally ill and low-income families. The plan, entitled “A Partnership for a Healthy North Carolina,” calls for providers, recipients, taxpayers and the state to come together to implement a coordinated care model of delivery to bring long-term predictability, sustainability and efficiency to the program.

“Medicaid reform is long overdue and essential for the future health of North Carolina,” said Governor McCrory. “We’re bringing all partners together to improve care, customer service and efficiency, but most importantly, to deliver right care at the right place at the right time to improve results for our state’s most vulnerable citizens.”

The Health Care Law

In March 2010, President Obama signed into law the Affordable Care Act.

The Law Increases Your Access to Affordable Care. Please feel free to pick up the phone and give us a call if you have any questions about this law. Your local Huntersville – Charlotte Fogle Insurance Agent will be more than happy to provide you answers to all your insurance questions.

In many cases, you can get preventive services for free:

  • Depression screening
  • Birth control
  • Tobacco cessation counseling and interventions
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Vaccinations such as flu, mumps & measles
  • And more…

Did You Know…

  • The law builds on our private health insurance system.
  • The law gives states significant flexibility in implementing the law. If states can identify their own path to accomplish the same goals, they’re free to take it.
  • The law does not add to the deficit. According to the independent Congressional Budget Office, the law is paid for.
There are new plans in every state for people who have been locked out of the insurance market because of a pre-existing condition like cancer or heart disease.
“When I was diagnosed, they told me I had a 60 percent chance of being cured. That’s pretty good odds, but I was also terribly worried about finances. Now I don’t feel like we can’t afford the treatment.” –Gail O. in New Hampshire
